Maryland is one of the most exciting newcomers to the breeding scene in recent years! He completely dominated his crop as a two-year-old and has been in the spotlight ever since his very first steps on the track.
Like Walner, Maryland is by Chapter Seven. His dam, Crucial, took a lifetime mark of 1:52,4 (1.09.8) and won the Currier & Ives, the Pennsylvania Sire Stakes Championship, and finished fourth in the Hambletonian Oaks. She is also a sister to millionaire Venerable, who has a 1:50,3 (1.08,8) record and victories in the Jim Doherty, Peaceful Way, and New Jersey Sire Stakes Final. Another sister, Voguish, earned close to half a million dollars. Add to that their younger sister Ineffable, dam of top performer Inexpressable, who this year has won the Kentucky Championship, the Earl Beal Jr. Memorial, and the Yonkers Trot!
Maryland attracted attention already as a young horse and was purchased for close to SEK 5 million at the Lexington sale. After making one break in his first start, he returned to win his debut at 1:56.4 (1.12,6) in June as a two-year-old. He was named Two-Year-Old of the Year in both the USA and Canada after victories in the Peter Haughton Memorial, William Wellwood Memorial, and Breeders Crown. He ended the season with a victory in the Kindergarten and earnings of $1,227,695!
As a three-year-old, Maryland finished second in the Kentucky Futurity and Canadian Trotting Classic, as well as third in the Hambletonian. Interest in his breeding services in North America was extremely high in his debut season – he covered 134 mares and 119 are in foal!
Maryland combines modern bloodlines, one of the world's most sought-after maternal families, talent, precocity, and conformation, giving him every opportunity to make a significant impact and move several positions forward in the breeding industry of the future.
